It is with great sadness that we share that James Raymond Mandernacht passed away Sept. 13, 2024 at Texas County Memorial Hospital in Houston surrounded by family.
James was born Aug. 31, 1943 in Fresno, California. Born to father, Emil Mandernacht, and mother, June (Snare) Vasquez. He was raised by his mother and stepfather John Westfall.
James was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Carl David Mandernacht; and daughter, Rebecca Elaine Mandernacht.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Caroline Elaine (Fraijo) Mandernacht of Houston; sister, Doris June (Mandernacht) Frasier of Ridgefield, Washington; daughters, Tina Love of Plato, Missouri, Lynna Mandernacht of Quincy, California, Kathleen Barker and spouse James of Houston; Deborah Dorman and spouse Todd of Houston; grandchildren Amanda Carrithers, Travis Barker, Crystal Wade and spouse Nate, Randall Barker and spouse Patience, Trevor Pierce, Jack Love, Andrew Edwards and spouse Hayley, Alissa Barker, Robin Love, Kaileigh Barker, Katelyn Edwards, Emilee Edwards; and 14 great-grandchildren.
James enlisted in the United States Navy in 1960 and served as a chief sonar technician on several different destroyers, including the USS King. He retired after 20 years as chief petty officer. Later retiring from Librascope, where he taught Naval recruits sonar technology, he and his wife Carol moved to Missouri where he is well known from his days at the Do-It Center.
James loved taking his children and grandchildren fishing and always seemed to out-fish everyone, every time. Deer hunting with his grandsons was always a highlight. He loved sharing his life experiences aboard the USS King, as well as many other ships, with friends and family. He also enjoyed oil painting, raising pigeons, camping, cheering on the Chiefs, lake trips and family gatherings for any and all occasions. If there was a school event or ballgame that involved one of his grandchildren, he was there!
James was a special soul and everyone who knew him is better for it.

A visitation for James will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12 at Evans Funeral Home in Houston. A memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. with Paul Murray officiating. Arrangements entrusted to Evans Funeral Home. Online condolences may be left at www.evansfh.com.
