High winds that whipped through Texas County on Thursday night left many without power in service areas handled by Intercounty Electric Cooperative, officials said.

At 9:15 p.m. Thursday, about 1,500 were without power in the county. That’s about 14 percent of the customers.

By 10:55 a.m., the number was reduced to 452, primarily in the Houston area.

One trouble spot in the Houston area was east of the community, where 11 three-phase poles were snapped and required replacement.

By Friday afternoon, Intercounty works had restored nearly everyone’s power, it said. Only a few remained near the Ashley Creek area.

It said 24 poles broke during the Thursday evening storm. In all, 42 linemen worked last night and that number increased Friday, it said. “We’re so grateful to them and their dedication to the co-op and our members,” it said.

Texas County 911 reported in the first hour of the stormy weather, it received 50 calls. As the storm entered the second hour a total of 73 had been received. On average, 90 calls are received in a 24-hour period.
