The Houston High School volleyball team has been honored for its academic excellence for the fourth consecutive season.
HHS was among a record 1,126 teams to receive the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s Team Academic Award for the 2018-2019 season. The Lady Tigers, who had a collective 3.4 grade-point average, have earned the honor each year since 2016.
The award honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that maintained at least a 3.30 cumulative team GPA on a 4.0 scale. This year’s total eclipses the previous year’s total of 977 to set an all-time high.
In January, four HHS players – Melody Buse, Darby Bell, Janae Huff and Kelly Hubbs – were named to the Missouri State High School Volleyball Coaches Association academic all-state team. That honor required at least a 3.6 GPA and playing in 75 percent of the team’s matches.
Houston is coached by Loran Richardson.
