Personnel from the Houston Rural Fire Department responded Thursday afternoon to a fire that burned a sizable piece of land off of Oak Hill Drive.
Four trucks and about 10 firefighters tended to the blaze, which spread quickly in dry, windy conditions and blackened close to three acres of open space.
Firefighters at the scene said flames fanned by wind grew fast and moved quickly across an area with lots of sage grass. The fire almost made it into a wooded area north of the field, but it was controlled shortly before the situation worsened.
Houston Rural firefighter Doug Gaston said the department has been very busy of late.
“We’ve been to a lot of grass fires,” Gaston said. “People really need to take fire danger warnings seriously.”
