SCHOOL COLLECTS 90 POUNDS OF HALLOWEEN CANDY FOR TROOPS, FIRST RESPONDERS
Taking candy from children is usually frowned upon. But teaching kids the value of giving back by donating their excess Halloween candy in support of U.S. Troops and First Responders is a winwin for kids, parents and schools alike.
This Halloween, local trick-or-treaters joined kids across the nation when they brought their Halloween candy to Houston Schools. The goodies will be shipped to Operation Gratitude for inclusion in Care Packages to Service Members deployed overseas and first responders serving here at home.
Loran Richardson, coordinator of the Healthy Schools program in Houston, said the district collected 90 pounds of candy.
VETERANS TRIBUTE SET FOR FRIDAY
A tribute to veterans is Friday at Hiett Gymnasium on the Houston School District campus. Houston Mayor Don Tottingham is the speaker at the event, which runs from 1-2 p.m.
Following the assembly, a reception with refreshments will be in the north lobby.
Area veterans are invited to attend the 18th annual tribune and the reception in their honor.
The ceremony will be streamed online via the Herald’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/houstonherald.
ANDERSON WINS ‘IT CAN WAIT’ ESSAY CONTEST
Houston High School senior Sydney Anderson is the winner of the annual ‘It Can Wait’ essay contested hosted by the Houston Herald in partnership with the Missouri Press Association.
