Judges with the Missouri Community Betterment program recently visited at the Melba Theatre in Houston as part of the annual competition in the state. Here, Jim McNiell highlights a program to place address numbers on the front of homes and business. Looking on are members of the youth arm of the local community betterment program. 

A Houston delegation will attend the 54th annual Missouri Community Betterment Conference today and Monday in Columbia.

Houston is vying for honors in its population category during a banquet, which is Monday at the Stoney Creek Hotel and Conference Center.  Two judges recently toured the community and learned more about Houston projects included in this year’s entry:

•Melba Theatre renovation.

•Houston Community Betterment and YOUTH, address numbering project.

•Rutherford Park expansion.

•Creation of Rascalz, a teen club and community center on Grand Avenue.

•Bicycle safety program.

This year’s theme is “Rural Progress and Pride.” The keynote speaker is Deb Brown, who will discuss “Rural Innovative Business Models.”
