Each month I’m happy to say that American Legion Post 41 is growing – granted, slowly, but the post is growing!

And each month I hear the rumors that Post 41 is closed due to inactivity. This is not the case!

I would like to remind all the readers that the coffee bar and officers call is every Wednesday from 9 to 11 a.m., some days (like today) it ran over to 2 p.m.

Also I would like to repeat that May 20 is Armed Forces Day, and the American Legion Post 41 will sponsor a community celebration at the Houston Area Chamber of Commerce fairgrounds.

The event will start at approximately 8:30 a.m. (hopefully I will be awake and fortified with coffee by then) and will wind down around 4 p.m.  We have two flag retirement ceremonies scheduled – one in the morning and one in the afternoon. All non-profit organizations are welcome to participate and set up booths. Just come by the post (located next to Pizza Hut) on Wednesdays and speak to any of the Legion officers for more information.

At the end of May is Memorial Day, and next month I hope to cover a bit of history regarding that special day. That, of course, depends on many variables. A lot can happen in a couple of weeks.

Fortunately, there are no local veteran deaths to mention this month – at least none that has been relayed to me.

I have been asked why I don’t expound on the planned activities for Armed Forces Day? I want to hold a bit of intrigue and add a bit of mystery to the day. I realize that there will be competition with the Houston High School graduation ceremony, and the Tweed House organization is also hosting an event. So there will be plenty of things for the community to see – and possibly enjoy!

There will be a few military vehicles at the fairgrounds for people to look over. Also hot dogs and burgers are planned, with a rather large grill being tended to by a volunteer.

Overall, it should be a quite interesting day for everyone.

Remember: Legion meetings are at 5:30 p.m on the second Thursday of each month, and the coffee bar/officers call gathering is every 9 to 11 a.m. every Wednesday.

We enjoy having visitors at each meeting.

Until next month!
