The first of two kids cooking classes took place on Tuesday of last week at the Community Kitchen inside the University of Missouri Texas County Extension center on Main Street in downtown Houston.

The event was hosted by Healthy Schools Healthy Communities (HSHC).

“Healthy Schools Healthy Communities is proud to sponsor such a wonderful thing that not only teaches kids how to cook healthy food, but teaches them nutrition and how to have fun doing it all,” HSHC community wellness coordinator Earlene Stoops said. “We had so much fun and most of the kids said they had never had spinach, onions or cottage cheese in their food and they loved it and want to make this meal again at home.

“This is what it is all about. What a success story.”

HSHC partnered with MU Extension and Downtown Houston Inc. to host the class.

“These kids went home with some great things sponsored by HSHC and they got to ride the smoothie bike HSHC sponsored and make their own smoothies while getting exercise,” Stoops said. “Some of the kids ate food they hadn’t tasted before and loved it. We are on our way to teaching our youth have to live a more active healthier life, which if a goal of HSHC.”

A second kids cooking class is set for June 21.

“Be watching for all kinds of new things provided for our youth in the future,” Stoops said.
