A worker with Logan Excavating of Vienna uses a saw on a new sidewalk on Ozark Avenue in Houston. Other work is targeted for Bryan and Chestnut streets.

Sidewalk work at several locations in Houston is underway as part of a statewide program to improve transportation near school districts.

Logan Excavating of Vienna is the contractor for the $251,401 sidewalk project as part of a statewide initiative, “Safe Routes to School.”  The firm recently completed an unrelated sidewalk project on Oak Hill Drive.

The latest effort is covered almost entirely by the “Safe Routes to School” grant program administered by MoDOT. The funds are federal dollars designated for increasing the safety of the children in grades K-8 to walk, bike and wheel to school and are administered through the highway safety division of the Missouri Department of Transportation.

The sites are:

• Frederick Street and Ozark Avenue intersection west on Ozark to Airport Road.

• King and Chestnut streets intersection west on Chestnut to Hamrick Avenue.

• Bryan and Hawthorn street intersection south to Highway 17.

The sidewalks will connect with an existing network on Highway 17 and Airport Road, as well as extend current ones on Chestnut Street.

It is the second time the City of Houston has participated in the “Safe Routes To School” program. During phase I, work was completed closer to the school campus.
