Houston Varsity Club

A group of former Houston High School football players wanted to help the program and were unsure how. The quarterback club was defunct and none of them had the time to volunteer.

But they did have money.

So the group, including Mike Tottingham, Tyler Romines and Kevin Reed formed the Houston Varsity Club.

The concept for the organization is simple: give money.

“We knew there are a lot of people in town who don’t have the time to volunteer, but they are willing to donate money for the cause of the football team,” Tottingham said.

The varsity club is hosting Saturday’s annual pig roast and scrimmage. Food will be served from 5-7 p.m. with the scrimmage to follow. Cost is $7 for a meal consisting of a pulled pork sandwich, baked beans, chips, dessert and soda or water.

HHS head football coach Eric Sloan said the scrimmage will be held on the field unless it receives heavy rain beforehand.

The varsity club is seeking members to join the group. There are no volunteer hours, just a $50 membership fee that will be given to the football program.

Tottingham, a 1999 HHS graduate and former football player, said Sloan was appreciative of the group’s efforts. Proceeds from the pig roast will be used to purchase new travel bags and the next goal is a lineman chute.

“People are excited about the program, so it was a good time to take that excitement and do something positive,” Tottingham said.
