Fire crews from four departments responded early Thursday morning to a house fire in Houston.
City of Houston Fire Chief Joey Moore said personnel from his department were dispatched at 1:45 a.m. to a residential structure fire at 302 W. Mill St. Moore said when firefighters arrived, they found flames extending from the first floor through the roof of the two-story home.
“Due to the amount of fire upon arrival, entry into the residence was not made and crews worked to keep the fire from spreading to a nearby residence,” Moore said.
A total of 20 firefighters responded from City of Houston, Houston Rural, Licking and Raymondville fire departments. Moore said the fire was brought under control at 4:01 a.m. and personnel left the scene at 6:28 a.m.
The fire was found by Houston police Cpl. David Kidwell. The scorched residence was a rental property owned by Chance Drake.
Moore said the cause of the blaze is still under investigation, but it appeared to have started near a furnace. There was no one home at the time of the fire, which had been occupied by the Tina Neal family.
City fire personnel returned to the scene just before noon to tend to rekindled hot spots.
