Firefighters from four volunteer departments responded early Friday afternoon to a blaze that ruined a home at Chick Johnston and Cherry streets in Raymondville.
Houston Rural Fire Chief Don Gaston said that after the call came in at about 1:25 p.m., a total of five trucks traveled to the scene, including vehicles from his department, the City of Houston, Licking and Raymondville.
Homeowner Deanna Smith told authorities the blaze began as a grease fire from cooking. The house was a total loss.
“It was really hot,” Gaston said. “But there were four kids and two dogs inside, and she did the right thing to quit worrying about the fire and getting everybody out.”
One Raymondville firefighter was overcome by exhaustion at the scene and was taken by ambulance to the hospital.
