Firemen from two departments were called to a house blaze on Dewey Street in Houston. Another home to the east sustained damage.

A Houston home was destroyed by fire early Friday, authorities said.

The Houston Fire Department was first called at about 11:45 p.m. Thursday to 1128 Dewey St., where a fire had spread from a utility room on the carport to the attic, said Fire Chief Joey Moore. Occupants of the Wilma Franklin home were alerted to the fire by a neighbor who noticed the flames, he said. Everyone escaped without injury.

Moore said the fire was relieved to have been started by a faulty extension cord.

Neighbors said a vehicle under a carport was pushed to near the roadside.

Firemen left at 2:07 a.m. after the department responding with two trucks and nine personnel. Houston Rural assisted with two trucks and three firemen.

The department again checked the house at about 5:30 a.m. with no sign of fire. Firemen — city and rural — were called again at about 6:30 a.m. after the blaze rekindled and was fully involved. Fire and heavy smoke was bellowing from the structure as neighbors looked on.

Moore said it was disappointing to lose the house after firemen had worked so hard to bring it under control after the initial call.

A residence to the east of the fire scene also sustained damage.

Also assisting at the scene was the Houston Police Department and City of Houston utility workers.
