An effort by several will bring a Christmas tree to downtown Houston.

Local merchants and Houston supporters announced plans Tuesday to place a Christmas tree at Lone Star Plaza for the holidays.

The U.S. Forest Service will provide the tree, and the City of Houston will erect it and light it. Houston Do-it Center and Houston Walmart Supercenter pitched in to provide lights.

A lighting is planned for 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, which is at the conclusion of the annual Taste of Christmas competition, said Sharon Sillyman, who helped coordinate the details.
