A farmers market operates twice a week at the Lone Star Plaza.

An organization Thursday gave approval to an event that will be held in conjunction with the downtown farmers market project.

It will showcase local products and farm business suppliers. It is hoped that local feed, garden and farm supply dealers will participate, as well as health and nutrition agencies, 4-H and FFA, along with other local businesses. No date has been set.

The event was discussed during a two-hour Downtown Houston Inc. meeting.

Other topics, members:

—Reviewed bids for a roof replacement project for the Lone Star Plaza Annex, which will include a commercial kitchen, public space and the Friends of the Library Book Store.

—Expressed thanks to those who have worked to expand the farmers market to a two-day event, Tuesday afternoons and Friday mornings.

—Received an update on installation plans to add shades at the plaza’s canopy.

—Discussed ramping up fund-raising efforts for the annex and Melba Theatre renovation. Donations are tax-deductible and generous state tax credits are available for both efforts.

—Learned that judges with the Missouri Community Betterment Program will be in Houston at 8 a.m. Sept. 9. Houston won its population category last year.

—Heard that the Lone Star Plaza has been reserved on Sept. 20 for a dinner and awareness event for the local Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children (CASA) organization.

The next meeting is 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, at the Herald’s meeting room.
