The targeted areas are marked in red. The improvements - when completed - will also allow the city to target smaller areas when problems occur; without inconveniencing bigger geographic areas.

The City of Houston’s water department is planning outages as part of system improvements early Wednesday.

City Water Superintendent Jerry Jackson said areas are on the north side of Hawthorn — east of Bryan, as well as south of Hawthorn. Two structuress of Oak near First Street are also affected, as are some customers south of the Houston Fire Department station.

While work is being done (expect four-eight hours), water will be turned off, said City Administrator Larry Sutton.

After water is restored, there will be a “boil order” in effect until the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (DNR) gives its okay. It will be only for the area where work is performed. This is normally a two-three day period for DNR to give its okay.

Notice will be placed on the Houston Herald’s website before work begins. A text message also will be distributed through its system.

Here are some tips to help you prepare if you live in the area, according to the city: Store bottled water for drinking. Also draw water in advance that could be used to flush toilets and be used for other purposes.
