Houston Fire Chief Don Rust with first graders in the early 1980s. 

The Houston City Council named a new leader for the Houston Fire Department to replace its retiring longtime fire chief.

Joey Moore was named Monday to replace Don Rust, who has held the post for more than three decades. The appointment is effective May 1. The city is planning a reception to show its appreciation for Rust on May 9. The event is 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Houston Storm Shelter. A presentation begins at 7 p.m.

Moore is a probation and parole officer with the State of Missouri.

Houston Mayor Don Tottingham also appointed several officials for the coming year. They are: Larry Sutton, city administrator; Tonya Foster, city clerk; Brad Eidson, city attorney; Jim McNiell, police chief; John Garrabrant, municipal judge; Bruce Wilson, city treasurer; and Bennie Cook, emergency management director.
