Firefighters from the Houston Rural Fire Association responded Tuesday afternoon at about 3 p.m. to a field fire between U.S. 63 and Millstone Road.
Feeding off of a bounty of dry grass, the fire moved quickly on property owned by Lonnie Barton and blackened about an acre before being snuffed. Houston Rural Fire Chief Don Gaston said it was started by a person using a cutting torch.
Two brush units, a pumper truck and about a half dozen Houston Rural personnel tended to the scene, and stopped the blaze from spreading beyond a fence line separating the field from a pair of adjacent business – Steve’s Tire and ARPCO Pump Service.
