The Houston Adult Education and Literacy office now offers classes in Texas, Shannon, Howell, Dent, Wright and Douglas counties.
Students may enroll to study for the high school equivalency test, to gain basic skills or to prepare for college entrance exams.
The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education [DESE] will begin using a new high school equivalency test Jan. 1.
HiSET, a test developed by Educational Testing Service, will replace the 2002 Series GED test, which expires at the end of 2013.
The cost of the HiSET for first-time applicants will be $95, which includes a $60 registration fee paid to DESE and $7 paid to the testing site for each of the five test sections. Examinees do not have to complete the entire test at one time; they can take the test in sections.
The $60 registration fee will allow individuals to test three times during a 12-month period. Examinees that do not pass the HiSET the first time can retake the entire test or any of the test sections two more times within the 12-month period by paying an additional $7-per-section fee. Testing sites for the new exam are still being determined. Registration for the HiSET began Nov. 8.
Any scores achieved on the GED will not transfer to the new HiSET test.
