A school safety discussion is planned at Plato, officials said.

Members of local law enforcement agencies will meet next month with the staff and faculty at Plato Schools to discuss school safety.

Texas County Sheriff James Sigman and Sgt. Tim Ceplina of the Houston Police Department will lead a contingent that will include members of the sheriff’s department and the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

“Having someone like Sgt. Ceplina and Sheriff Sigman visit Plato Schools and present their expertise on how we should handle violent situations will be very beneficial for us,” said Dr. Ben Yocom, Plato Superintendent.

Yocom said the meeting will include “dos and don’ts” during a violent situation, question-and-answer session and assessment of the school campus. Yocom said the walk-through will also allow local officers to become familiar with the district and its buildings.

“The recent event in Connecticut has caused all of us to re-evaluate everything regarding school safety,” Yocom said. “Providing the safest environment is our highest priority. If students feel unsafe, they are less likely to learn, and learning is why we are here.”
