County deputies are investigating metal swiped at a business. The act was caught on camera.
A Texas County Sheriff’s Department officer reported March 22 that he had received a call about a week earlier from a Summersville man who stated he had witnessed the theft of scrap metal from a recycling center.
The officer traveled to Summersville and the man told him he had seen a vehicle pull up to the center and watched two females and one male load bags of aluminum cans into it. The vehicle reportedly pulled up right in front of a surveillance camera, and at least two of the suspects were later identified.
As part of the investigation, the officer called a Mountain View salvage yard and was told by an employee that a car matching the description of the one at the recycling center had been there twice in two days, and that two females and one male had sold bags of aluminum cans. Copies of receipts from the sales were obtained as evidence.
The investigation continues, and citations will reportedly be issued when the suspects are located.
The following are other matters dealt with last week by the sheriff’s department:
March 20
––An officer said that he had spoken to a probation officer who stated an 18-year-old offender’s mother reported Feb. 27 her son had cut off an alcohol monitoring ankle bracelet valued at $3,500 and thrown it in a ditch.
A probable cause statement was sent to the county prosecutor.
March 22
––A 40-year-old Houston woman called to report that a 2- to 3-week-old Holstein Heifer calf valued at $200 was missing from its pen at her Hawkeye Road residence.
The woman showed an investigating officer a shoe print that allegedly didn’t belong to anyone she knew.
There are no suspects, but a report was forwarded to the Rural Crimes Task Force.
––A representative of Lynch Township reported that “keep right” road signs had been stolen from Bell Road and Success Road. The representative stated the signs had been put up about two weeks earlier, and grader drivers had noticed one missing on March 17 and the other on March 19.
There are no suspects, but investigation continues.
––A 59-year-old Licking woman came to the TCSD office and stated that on Jan. 26 she had given $8,000 to a man to do some work on her Hartville road residence.
The woman stated that the man hasn’t done the promised work and would not return her calls.
An officer advised her the matter was civil and that she should speak with an attorney.
––A 46-year-old Licking woman called to report that prescription medication valued at $150 had been stolen from her Highway 137 residence.
The woman stated she suspected her 21-year-old daughter, and requested that the daughter be contacted by an officer and told to stay off her property.
The Licking Police Department was contacted to follow through with that request, and the woman was advised that if her daughter returned to her residence, she would be cited for trespassing.
March 23
––An officer reported that on March 17 he had investigated a report of theft at a Greenwood Drive residence at Cabool.
The 43-year-old female resident told the officer that someone had swiped a Craftsman power washer valued at $250, wheels and beauty rings from a 1970 Chevrolet Camaro estimated at $250, and a Stihl Weedeater worth $200.
There are no suspects.
March 24
––A Houston man called to report a couple fighting in a residence adjacent to his Forrest Drive home.
An officer made contact with the couple, and neither party wanted to press charges. The officer warned them that if it happened again they would be cited for peace disturbance.
March 26
––An officer reported that on March 24 he had investigated a report of vehicle theft at a Mountain Grove location.
The officer said a 46-year-old man had apparently purchased an engine for his truck and left it at a 60-year-old man’s business until it was paid for. The business owner told the officer that he had contacted the truck owner several times for payment, but had not received any money toward the deal. He stated that he finally told the truck owner that if he didn’t pay, the truck would be sold.
He did sell it, which was purchased by an employee of his business. The officer advised the owner that he couldn’t sell the truck without a title, and it was returned to the 46-year-old man.
