Heavy rains with significant rainfall totals have caused many roads in South Central Missouri to flood. With additional rainfall expected this week, the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) reminded motorists to be prepared for localized flooding and to drive cautiously when traveling.
Flash floods can come quickly and unexpectedly. The majority of deaths due to flash flooding are attributed to motorists attempting to drive through flooded areas. Keep these safety tips for driving in wet conditions in mind:
*Do not drive unless absolutely necessary.
*Do not use cruise control in wet weather.
*Never drive through fast-moving water – your vehicle could easily be swept off the roadway. Just six inches of water can reach the bottom of most cars, causing stalling or loss of control. Two feet of rushing water can carry away most vehicles.
*Do not drive in flooded areas – remember that the water can be deceptively deep.
*If your vehicle does get stuck in rising water, get out quickly and move to higher ground.
*Never go around barriers or barricades.
Conditions change quickly and motorists are encouraged to check http://www.modot.org/ for updated road conditions.
