Are you dreaming of a bright Christmas? Check out these homes and businesses in the area that are helping make Houston sparkle for the holidays.
Last week, a panel of judges including two out-of-state residents and one HHS high school student traveled throughout Houston and the neighborhoods just outside the city limits to see the lights of Christmas.
Winners in the business category are: First place, Untangled Salon, 706 S. First St.; second, Paws ‘N’ Claws, 114 Second St.; third, Infinite Entertainment, 1593 N. U.S. 63. Honorable mention went to Houston Veterinary Hospital at 211 N. Grand Ave.
In the religious, non-religious, and blended these were chosen as best representations of the Christmas spirit. Religious category winners are: C.J. and Sandra Smith at 606 Hayes Drive and Larry and Bonnie Gaston at 17450 Oakwood Road in Oakwood Estates. Winners in the traditional category are Charlie Haley at 16712 Oak Hill Drive and Nadine Stark at 504 Grand Ave. In the combined decorations category the winners are Allen and Debbie Starr at 17159 Rusty Drive and Bodi and Anita Williams at 115 Wyn St.
The Houston Area Chamber of Commerce is making plans now for the 2011 Christmas season and will revitalize the residential lighting contest as well as continue the traditional business lighting contest. The categories for residential decorations will be: traditional, religious, combined, (a blend of traditional secular and religious), best door decorations and best use of LED lighting. Another category, best window decorations, will be added as a category for Houston’s business district in 2011.
“We’d like to have 20 entries in each category in 2011! We are encouraging Houston business owners and residents to think about next year as they take down this year’s decorations and shop the after-Christmas sales,” said Sharon Horbyk, chamber of commerce executive director.
