While his medical bills continue to increase, Alan Marshall’s frustration also swells because no charges have been filed in his brutal beating at Bucyrus.

Marshall, 33, says three people entered his home on June 23 and beat him with a baseball bat. Two of the suspects are the brothers of his ex-girlfriend. Marshall, who was hospitalized for a day, continues treatment for head trauma received in the attack near Highways 38 and 17. A scar on his head stands as evidence to the crime. “I did not do anything to these people,” Marshall said. The suspects took clothes, a bank card, a wallet, checks and money before leaving the scene with the keys to his pickup.

Marshall managed to make a call to Wri-Tex 911 seeking help, which sparked a dragnet for suspects in a vehicle with Oklahoma license plates. It was never found, and he can’t see any progress in the case as he continues to undergo medical treatment for his injuries. And he wonders why. Could it be that as a teen he was convicted of a felon and served time? Or was it that authorities found some small marijuana plants on the rented property? He doesn’t know.

At last count, he estimates his medical treatment totals more than $30,000.

Marshall, whose vocation is vehicle renovation work, said this week he’s been told by a county investigator, deputy Mike Huffman, that he is awaiting photos from Oklahoma authorities to be included in a lineup for the Bucyrus man to identify. Marshall said this week he believes he’ll have no trouble identifying those who beat him up. “You just don’t forget something like that,” Marshall said. “I just don’t know why it is taking so long. I’ve gone as far as to spend my own money to have a private detective locate these people and get their addresses.” Marshall is receiving assistance from the Missouri Victim’s Assistance Network in Jefferson City.

Marshall’s family has suffered with tragedy before. Last September, Marshall’s older brother, Skip, 42, was killed with a blunt instrument in a Pike County assault. “I don’t know, but I wonder if that’s where the idea came to attack me.”
