The Houston board of education will seek input across the community before deciding whether to place a bond issue on the April ballot. If approved, the funds would be used for construction of a new high school.

The discussion came Monday during the board’s monthly meeting.

Patrons earlier this year turned down a proposal that would have resulted in the new school and made other improvements across the campus. Since that time, the district has made several improvements to campus infrastructure as it has available funds. Those include new sidewalks and a new loading dock at the high school cafeteria. Individual buildings also received attention.

In other matters, members:

-Recognized fifth grade teachers for their implementation of a new reading program, which represents a new approach to the subject.

-Honored Joe Montgomery, transportation director, for a 100 percent pass rate following a state review of the district’s bus fleet. It marks the 12th year in a row that the district has received a perfect rating.

-Approved bus routes for the school year.

-Tabled a decision on whether to hire a part-time secretary to work with the Title I program.

-Increased pay from $6 to $8 an hour for those working sports gates.

-Created an additional paraprofessional position to meet student needs in the area of special education.

-Adjourned into a closed session to discuss personnel issues.
