The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has allocated more than $1.5 million in solid waste management funds to the 20 solid waste management districts in Missouri for the third quarter of state fiscal year 2009, including District P that includes Texas County.

The funds enable Missouri’s Solid Waste Management Districts to operate and grant funds to cities, counties and businesses for solid waste management, waste reduction, recycling and related services that create and retain jobs. Missouri’s 20 solid waste management districts were organized to encourage regional cooperation and to help ensure proper solid waste management through waste reduction and recycling activities.

This area’s region received $67,390.

Each district chooses when to hold their grant application process, which may be annually, quarterly or continuously throughout the year.

These grants are provided from the Solid Waste Management Fund, which is made up of tonnage fees charged for each ton of waste disposed of in Missouri landfills or processed through transfer stations that move waste out-of-state. A major amendment to the Solid Waste Management Law in 1990 created a goal to significantly reduce the amount of waste going to landfills. The projects funded by these grant funds will help the individual districts achieve this goal.

Revenue from the solid waste disposal fee is used to fund local solid waste management district activities, such as grants to communities and small businesses and for the operation of the state’s Solid Waste Management Program. The state’s work includes compliance assistance, permitting, inspection and enforcement activities. These funds are allocated quarterly to the districts.
