Ozark National Scenic Riverways will host the “Alley Independence Day Celebration” at Alley Spring from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Saturday.
The event commemorates the traditional picnic celebrations that were held at Alley Spring around the turn of the 20th century when this area was the social gathering place for local families. Several Ozark traditions are planned: blacksmithing, traditional woodworking, quilting, butter churning, ice cream making and basket weaving. Children of all ages can also enjoy old-fashioned games and toys. Musical entertainment will be provided as well, and ice cream and food will be available for purchase from local vendors.
There will be a special viewing of “Shannon County Home, Part 1: A Portrait of the Ozarks.” This film will be shown at the Alley Spring Campground Amphitheater at 8:30 p.m. “Shannon County Home” includes interviews with local residents and presents a glimpse of what life was like for local people in 1981, when the film was produced. It is approximately one hour in length.
Persons should bring their blanket or lawn chair for the musical entertainment. Both the picnic celebration and the film are free, and all are welcome. For more information call 573-226-3945, or visit online information at: www.nps.gov/ozar
