Don’t tell Houston shoppers that the nation is in the middle of a recession: Merchants’ cash registers continue to ring at a good clip, according to the latest report from the Missouri Department of Revenue.
Revenue from a one-cent sales tax totaled $42,998, which is up $3,455 from the same period a year ago. That’s an increase of 8.7 percent.
Businesses also collect two quarter-cent sales taxes earmarked for roads and sidewalks, as well as utility work. Each totaled about $10,421, which is up about $750 from the same period a year ago.
An eighth-cent sales tax contributed $5,210 for city coffers. That money is used for debt repayment on a fire truck.
