Sales in the City of Houston were on an upswing, according to the latest monthly reports from the Missouri Department of Revenue.

The tally from a one-cent sales tax was $52,911, which was $4,160 more from the same period a year ago. For the year, sales tax revenue totals $484,891, which is up $11,409 in the first three quarters of the year, the state said. That’s up about 2.4 percent from a year ago.

Retailers also collect two quarter-cent sales taxes for streets and sidewalks, as well as utility work. Each totaled about $12,800, up about $1,014 from a year ago. For the year, about $116,900 has been collected. That’s an increase of about $2,200 from last year.

Collections from an eighth-cent sales tax for fire truck debt repayment totaled $6,404. That’s an increase of $507 from the same period a year ago. For the year, $58,313 has been collected. That’s about $1,198 more than the previous year’s period.

The sales tax reports are considered a good barometer of economic activity.
