Drivers around the state will begin recognizing bridges that will be improved over the next five years by “Safe & Sound” logo signs that will be placed on more than 800 of the state’s worst bridges.
All signs will be in place by the end of the month, and the Missouri Department of Transportation will begin prepping the public for what they can expect when work gets under way. MoDOT was directed to launch the “Safe & Sound Bridge Improvement Program” last month, with at least 100 bridges planned to be under construction by early 2009.
“When drivers see these signs, they should begin thinking about the probability that they will be closed during construction and plan accordingly,” said Pete Rahn, MoDOT director. “Closing these bridges lets the contractor complete the work quickly and get the bridges back open faster. It also keeps our costs down.”
