Pfc. Paul Burkhead was one of the first five soldiers from the Texas Army National Guard to set foot at Bolivar Island to view the devastation left in the wake of Hurricane Ike. Burkhead and others arrived on Galveston Island less than 12 hours after Ike roared through leaving people homeless and thousands without power and basic necessities. He is shown preparing to depart for storm relief in an Army Shinook heavy-life helicopter used to transport troops and supplies. Burkhead is the son of Dr. & Mrs. Max K. Burkhead II of Fort Worth, Texas, and the grandson of Max K. Burkhead Sr. of Arlington, Texas. He returned to Harding University in Searcy, Ark., on Sept. 19 to resume his studies and playing wide receiver for the Harding Bison.
