Spouses filing for divorce and landlords evicting a tenant will pay $10 more in service fees at the end of the month as part of a statewide program designed to fill salary gaps in rural sheriff’s departments.

The fee to use the sheriff’s department to serve court orders – such as a summons, writ or subpoena – will increase from $25 to $35 on Aug. 28.

Fees are going up to create the Deputy Sheriff Salary Supplementation Fund. The extra money is then doled out to sheriff’s departments that have deputies making less than $28,000.

Common services delivered by deputies include subpoenas delivered to someone who is being hit with a civil lawsuit or notifying someone that they are being asked to give a deposition statement to a lawyer.
