A project to create a walking and bicycling trail in Houston is making progress, according to a detailed report prepared for the Houston City Council.

The effort, the Village Trail, will eventually circle the town in a multi-year effort.

Elaine Campbell, development director for the City of Houston, reports that she continues to work with the Missouri Department of Transportation and engineers to develop the trail. “We’re making headway. There is a lot going on,” Campbell said.

Three sections have already received MoDOT funding:

*U.S. 63 from Highway 17 to Grand Avenue. Scott Consulting Engineers completed plans, which are under review by MoDOT. That segment is pegged at $289,000.

*Grand Avenue (beginning at Spruce Street) to a Brushy Creek low-water bridge that will be constructed. Part two is Grand Avenue to Emmett Kelly Park. Two native rock entry signs will be created on north and south U.S. 63. Cost is $322,700.

*Spruce Street from Grand Avenue (at the new county justice center) to near Airport Road. Cost is $234,500. A portion will include bridges on the Christie property.

*The city completed one segment itself through Emmett Kelly Park.

*Brushy Creek Trails, which is a $150,000 grant from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, will develop an area along the street and the site of the former Houston Redi-Mix. A trailhead is set for the former business site. Nearby, the Haney Market is being transformed into a welcome center.

Wildflowers and native grasses are set for seeding beginning this week on the hillside by Hamilton Native Outpost of Solo.

Volunteers are also sought to plant nearly 1,500 trees and plants along the Brushy Creek Trail. Trees are set to arrive at the end of March. Dottie Batson will coordinate the effort on Saturdays, March 29 and April 5. Both work days start at 9 a.m.

Any person or group interested should contact her at zasha@centurytel.net. Volunteers should bring buckets and spades if they can.

Donations to provide lunch or refreshments also are sought.
