Three Licking children were killed this afternoon when a trailer-truck unit struck their car in the rear at a road construction site south of Edgar Springs.

Dead are: Christel E. Miess, 11; Gaberielle J. Miess, an infant; and Gracy J. Miess, 5. Seriously injured was Mark T. Barton, 30, of Licking, who was flown to a Springfield hospital. Christina J. Miess, 34, sustained moderate injuries and was transferred to a Rolla hospital.

Several Missouri State Highway Patrol officers were called to the scene about three miles south of Edgar Springs on U.S. 63. The patrol said a trailer-truck unit driven north by Alvin Lewis, 38, of Moorhead, Miss., struck the car operated by Barton that was stopped at the road construction site.

A Missouri State Highway Patrol crash team is on the scene. Cpl. Curtis Haden and Tpr. Marty Wiseman, officers assigned to Texas County, were among those responding to the crash site.
