The Houston School District announced plans Tuesday for a school improvement committee meeting next week followed by the formation of a committee to seek passage of a bond issue in the April election.

The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the high school and middle school library. If additional space is required, the meeting will occur in the Fine Arts Building auditorium.

Any person interested in volunteering their time to support the issue is encouraged to attend. The project includes construction of a new facility, which would house a new library/media center, media computer room, three new science rooms and several other classrooms. If approved, Hiett Gymnasium would be remodeled. The long-range plan calls for it to connect to with the new building.

“We have an excellent academic school, as evidenced by our continued high achievement on MAP and other state and national testing programs,” said Clinton Waters, superintendent. “Our district received a perfect 14 out of 14 on its annual performance report and will receive the ‘Distinction in Performance Award’ once again this spring. Our parents and students value education, and we feel our students deserve a modern, up-to-day facility to enhance their education climate.”

At the meeting, building plans will be reviewed and rendering of the structure will be available.
