The Houston Herald opened its archives on this Web site for free beginning Thursday and lasting the next two weeks.

A few years ago, the Herald made a commitment to convert to a digital format every issue of the newspaper published since 1949. It was a mammoth project. Hard copies before that time were destroyed by a fire in April 1950. However, many single copies were still available, and those were added to the database, too.

Today, users of the archives reap the benefits every day. Through a search, they can find information on any topic ever published within seconds.

If you haven’t used it, test drive it for free during the next two weeks.
