Start spreading the news: The Houston Tigers are final four bound.
Just two days after winning the program’s first-ever sectional game, Houston made even more history Friday night as the Tigers downed Purdy 10-0 in five innings in the Class 2 quarterfinals.
Houston (17-6) is one of just four Class 2 baseball teams alive. The Tigers advance to the state semifinals (10 a.m. Wednesday in Springfield) where they await South Pemiscot or West County. Their quarterfinal game Wednesday was suspended 0-0 in the fifth inning. It will resume at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Gus Durst was mobbed by his teammates after throwing a complete-game shutout. The senior right-hander allowed just three hits and struck out seven.
Kirk Pierce led the offensive charge with a pair of doubles and four RBIs. Senior Justin Stringer had three steals and scored three times.
