Superintendent Scott Dill is pictured looking over the new library/media center on the campus of Houston Schools. Dill accepted a new job Thursday night as superintendent of Poplar Bluff R-1 Schools.

New construction at Houston Schools will be completed just in time for the beginning of classes.

Despite weather-related delays, Superintendent Scott Dill said the new structure connecting the former high school and middle school buildings will be ready to host students on Aug. 13 – the first official day of the 2015-’16 school year.

Dill said exterior work is nearly complete on the structure. On Tuesday morning, two men were using a lift to finish metal wrapping near the top of the second story.

Work on the interior continues with the main focus, Dill said, on completing the secretarial offices for both middle and high school. Most of the major work, including the elevator, is finished.

The construction, which includes a new library/media center, was the centerpiece of a $4 million bond issue passed with 72-percent approval in April 2013. The improvements also included an expanded cafeteria, roof repairs and adding air conditioning to Hiett Gymnasium.
