To the editor:
The July 4 celebration has passed for 2015. Many Americans proudly display a U.S. flag on our nation’s birthday. Most businesses and government buildings show their colors. The parades and awards ceremonies that happen on that day present the colors to show respect. What doesn’t show respect, is to steal someone else’s American flag and POW/MIA flag, so they will have these for their own use.
The supreme show of disrespect is to steal the flags of an American service organization, in a small Midwest town where we all usually show respect, trust and friendship to each other. This is what has happened at Houston Post 41 of the American Legion.
The theft occurred sometime in the few weeks before our nation’s holiday. The 4-foot by 6-foot U.S. flag and the 3-foot by 5-foot POW/MIA flag disappeared from the flagpole in front of the post. Post 41 is not a large post, and we have no way of making money except by the small things we do for the public. The flags will be replaced, either by the folks that the post have on their security camera, or by the post itself after it has more money in their coffers.
Shame on you, for disgracing the American flag and Post 41. Shame on you, for being the sneak-thieves that shouldn’t be a part of a civilized society. Shame on you, for disgracing the nation’s birthday by stealing the flags for yourselves. Shame on you.
