The Houston Herald has chronicled the history of this area since 1878.
The history of Texas County dates to 1845, and the impact of change through those many decades continues to affect our contemporary lives.
Soon, the complete archives of the chronicles of the Houston Herald will be available at the convenience of your personal computer or mobile device. About 12 years ago, the Herald rolled out its archives from 1945 to the present. The latest content extends to the 1880s. In all, about 18,000 pages of content — never available before in a digital format — will soon be available in a searchable online format. In addition to the Houston Herald, archives include issues from the Houston Republican, Texas County Pioneer (a southern Missouri journal in 1869), Texas County Sentinel (1890-1893) and Houston Democrat (1881-1883).
Access to historic articles, photos and newspaper pages are a treasure-trove for academics, students, genealogists and history buffs.
And the archives can also be very personal.
Your family genealogy will be more complete with the 128 years of digitized archives. You can access the history of your family’s birth notices, weddings or obituaries and how they helped to shape our area.
A dip into the content can be enjoyable: You can look up photos of the year your high school won a championship, when you received a special award or learn about the buildings, businesses and residents of the area.
Whatever happened to your past friends or work colleagues? The archives might even help you complete a project at work.
Previously, the research was difficult and involved hours of work looking at scratchy microfilm at the Texas County Library or The State Historical Society of Missouri in Columbia.
Soon you’ll be able to search the Houston Herald archives anytime and anywhere you have an online connection.
Here’s how it works:
•The final page count of the archives is expected to include more than 60,000 pages of information and includes information from May 1881 to the present.
•Archives can be accessed through an affordable subscription through the houstonherald.com website under “archives.” The Herald’s host vendor, Newspapers.com, and its affiliate, Ancestry.com, have archives of thousands of publications. It is believed the Herald will be the first weekly in the state to have its complete collection online.
•The database is searchable by name, subject or by date. The online search will display the whole page, articles, photos and ads.
