Beginning in August, the Texas County Health Department will offer a “Child Safety Seat Program” to residents of Texas County.

A certified passenger safety technician from their staff can inspect child car seats to determine if they meet standards for use.

Missouri child restraint law (RSMo 307.182) covers children less than 8 years of age. The law mandates children less than 4 years old or less than 40 pounds must be in an appropriate child safety seat. Children ages 4 through 7 who weigh at least 40 pounds must be in an appropriate child safety seat or a booster seat until they are over 80 pounds or taller than 4 feet, 9 inches. Standard state seat belt laws apply for children above these limits. The child restraint law includes all cars, pickup trucks and vans. Public carriers for hire are the only vehicles exempted.

“At this time we have a small supply of convertible infant/toddler seats and booster belt seats on hand for initial or replacement needs,” said Cheryl Nelson, child passenger safety advocate at the health department. “A minimal donation is requested for each seat distributed in order to purchase replacements.”

Jackie Smith, administrator, said: “We are pleased to be able to provide this beneficial service to the parents and children in our community. Public safety is one role public health is actively involved in.”
