Sister Claire Reinert, director of the Texas County Food Pantry, recently reported to the Houston Ministerial Alliance a growing concern regarding an increase in requests for assistance, especially the need for food. Hunger and homelessness have become a reality in Texas County, she said.
Due to an increase in the number of clients resulting from job losses and current economic difficulties, food supplies are running low. Food costs are also rising, seriously stretching the pantry’s available funding, which is also challenged in other areas, such as housing and utilities assistance.
Because of these concerns, Sister Claire, with the support of the Houston Ministerial Alliance, is proposing a food drive to be conducted by churches across Texas County. Churches are encouraged to participate by asking members to bring non-perishable, canned and dry goods to their churches on Sunday, Oct. 18. Items needed include canned fruits, vegetables, soups, meats, sauces, etc. and dry goods such as cereal, oatmeal, macaroni and cheese, spaghetti, pastas, Hamburger Helper, biscuit mix, pancake mix, instant potatoes, etc.
The Texas County Food Pantry has set aside Monday, Oct. 19, to receive donations. Churches are asked to deliver their donated items to the pantry between the hours of 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on that date. No contribution is too small-even one item will be greatly appreciated. If Oct. 19 is not a good delivery date for your church, donations will be received during any regular operating hours or by special arrangement.
Currently, the pantry distributes food every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. To meet increased demand, the pantry is now open for food distribution on Fridays as well.
