More than 20 seniors recently participated in a free AARP Older Driver Classroom Training course sponsored by the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety and held at Texas County Memorial Hospital.

The AARP Driver Safety Program is the nation’s first and largest refresher course for drivers aged 50 and older. Instructor Bob Cardwell taught participants current rules of the road, how to operate their vehicles more safety, the affects of medications on driving and how to adjust their driving to suit common age-related changes in vision, hearing and reaction time.

Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety Regional Coordinator Kelly Martin said she has been pleased with the number of seniors taking part in this free course.

“Last year, we were only able to offer two older driver classes. This year, we have already doubled that,” she said. “This is a great opportunity for our senior drivers to hone their driving skills and make Missouri’s roadways safer.”
