The Houston Area Chamber of Commerce announced several holiday activities Monday. Many events are planned.

They are:

—Business lighting contest – Judging on Friday evening, Dec. 11, is based on the “It’s A Wonderful Life…” theme, originality, lighting and work involved.

—Christmas ornament – This year’s offering includes a 1959 Houston Herald photograph of the county courthouse. The cost is $6.95.

—Names sought – The chamber is seeking the names by Dec. 1 of active military who have family, friends or spouses in the area.

—Taste of Christmas on Saturday, Nov. 28. An ad appears in this week’s Messenger. Food entries are accepted at participating businesses; customers vote on their favorites. A free Christmas movie, “A Christmas Carol” is at 2 p.m. that day at Phoenix Theatre.

—Events at Lone Star Plaza, 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5. A lighting ceremony occurs at 5 p.m. with pictures available with Santa, who will arrive by fire truck, at JAZ Trophies, Awards and Gifts.

—Tour of Homes in Houston from 4 – 7 p.m. Dec. 5.

—Miss Merrie Christmas Pageant at 6 p.m. Dec. 6 featuring middle and high school students inside the community building.

—The Animal of Shelter of Texas County dog show from 10 a.m. until noon Dec. 12 and Christmas parade, 2 p.m. that day.

—Food drive. Drop items off to Collector-Treasurer Tammy Cantrell, chamber office, Infinite Entertainment and JAZ Trophies, Awards and Gifts.

—Christmas spree drawings on Dec. 4, 11 and 19. The grand prize is $400.

—A Christmas bazaar is 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Saturday at Houston Senior Center.

—Texas County Relay for Life will sponsor, “Lights for Life,” from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Nov. 28 at the community building at the fairgrounds. Those attending can bid on decorated Christmas trees, purchase a new or used Christmas ornament and participate in the “Taste of Christmas.”
