The census is taken every 10 years. The population counts of political subdivisions have an impact on how $400 billion in federal money is allocated to local governments each year.
Regional Director Dennis Johnson said census workers will begin knocking on doors in most areas on May 1, and continue through the end of June. In areas around colleges, census workers will begin before May 1 because college students often move in May.
Census workers will visit a home up to six times in hopes of finding someone home who can answer the census questions, he said.
After six visits, a census worker may talk to neighbors or other knowledgable people in the community to obtain whatever information he or she can about the family living in a given residence. “If a neighbor walks by and says, ‘You can call them at this number,’ we’ll call.”
